Description
Recipient of the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, Venusta Queen of the Prairie is a North American native perennial that certainly lives up to her name. She is a statuesque, majestic beauty that is most definitely the queen of any prairie or perennial garden. Towering up to 8 feet tall and clothed in lacy, maple-like fragrant foliage, from early or mid summer to late summer her tall and sturdy stems are topped with huge plumes of fragrant soft-pink flowers that appear to float like a cloud atop her tall stems. One that will always have you and the butterflies looking forward to summer, Venusta Queen of the Prairie is a fine addition to moist and sunny areas in the garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 8 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Venusta Queen of the Prairie is ideal for use in sunny and moist perennial borders, meadows, marshes, fields, lake and creek margins, ditches and other areas where the soil tends to stay consistently moist. Also does very well combined with other summer flowering perennials in large container gardens such as whiskey barrels. A fine addition to bog and wetland gardens, meadow gardens, rain gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, native plant gardens, cottage gardens and pink theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for mass plantings
Growing Preferences
Venusta Queen of the Prairie is easy-to-grow in a consistently moist soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. Will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours in hot-summer climates. No pruning is required though spent flowers can be deadheaded if desired.
