Description
A natural and carefree beauty that lends an extremely fine and delicate texture to the landscape composition, ‘Tempelhof’ is a compact version of the Hinoki cypress growing to about 8 to 10 feet in height with a spread of 4 to 6 feet, depending on pruning. A fine specimen in the landscape, its dense, oval form produces whorled sprays of emerald green foliage with a golden tint on the new growth. Holds its color throughout the winter. It grows at a somewhat slow rate, and under ideal conditions is long-lived to 70 years or more.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing somewhat slowly in a pyramidal form 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the Tempelhof Honoki Cypress is ideal for use as an eye-catching focal point specimen or to frame corners in home foundation plantings. Also effective in small groupings or in straight or staggered rows to form a mid-size privacy hedge in landscape borders. It does very well in containers provided the container has a drainage hole(s) at the bottom and a quality potting soil is used. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian themed gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 to 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. It is moderately drought tolerant but will appreciate an occasional watering during prolonged periods of dry weather. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning is required. If you prune, only trim back the new growth of the current season. Tempelhoff has performed wonderfully here in our Zone 8a gardens in north-central Georgia with no significant negative characteristics.
