Description
Not only beautiful, super-hardy and long-lived, the Autumn Fern is evergreen! ‘Autumn Brilliance’ is a selection adored for its its particularly attractive and longer lasting and brighter spring frond color. New fronds unfurl in striking shades of orange-red to copper-pink before eventually maturing to glossy deep green by summer and often back to orange-red after first fall frost. Young sori are covered by bright red indusia. Growing in a vase shape to about 2 feet tall and equally as wide, Autumn Brilliance Fern is equally at home in containers as it is in garden beds and tolerates a little more sun than many other shade loving ferns.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 2 feet tall and 2 to 2.5 feet wide, the Autumn Brilliance Fern is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and in groupings or mass planted as an evergreen groundcover in larger landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Excellent as a solo or combined with other plants in pots, planters and other containers which can be situated on patios, decks, porches and around other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to woodland and shade gardens, Asian theme gardens, rock gardens, tropical-look gardens, orange theme gardens and around garden ponds.
Suggested Spacing: 18 to 24 inches apart for groupings or mass plantings; 4 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Autumn Fern is easy to grow and low maintenance. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and shade to partial shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade or late afternoon and evening sun is fine.
